Accidents

Former NFL cornerback D.J. Hayden, along with five others, tragically lost their lives in Houston during the early hours of Saturday morning in a devastating car accident. The collision occurred when a vehicle ran a red light, leading to a fatal crash with another car. Hayden, aged 33, was a standout player during his time at the University of Houston, where he shared the field with former teammates Zach McMillian and Ralph Oragwu, who also perished in the accident.

According to reports, four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, with two others succumbing to their injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital. One woman sustained life-threatening injuries, while another individual remained alert and cooperative with authorities during the investigation. Additionally, former University of Houston player Jeffery Lewis was injured but is currently in recovery.

Renowned for his exceptional talent and resilience, Hayden’s football career was marked by determination and fortitude. Despite a critical heart injury during practice in 2012, Hayden defied the odds and was later drafted 12th overall by the Oakland Raiders, now based in Las Vegas, in the 2013 NFL draft. Throughout his career, Hayden made significant contributions on the field, earning accolades and respect from his peers.

In a heartfelt statement, the Raiders expressed their condolences and highlighted Hayden’s unwavering dedication to his teammates. Hayden’s remarkable career spanned four teams, including the Raiders, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Washington Commanders, where he showcased his skills and garnered recognition for his outstanding performance on the field.

McMillian, an All-American Athletic Conference standout at cornerback, and Oragwu, a former offensive line player, also left indelible marks during their time at the University of Houston. The university community mourns the loss of these exceptional individuals and extends its deepest sympathies to their families and loved ones during this difficult time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic event as we honor the legacies of D.J. Hayden, Zachary McMillian, and Ralph Oragwu.
