The Maui Police Department’s Vehicle Homicide Crash Investigators are actively seeking the vehicle involved in the tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of Mr. Jesus Mettao on Monday, May 27, 2024, around 2:46 a.m. along Lono Avenue in Kahului. The victim in this tragic incident has been identified as Jesus Mettao (57), a familiar face in the Kahului area. The Maui Police Department extends heartfelt condolences to Mr. Mettao’s family and friends during this difficult time.
**Original Incident:**
In the early hours of Monday, May 27, 2024, a motor vehicle collision occurred on Lono Avenue, 165 feet southeast of Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului around 3:10 a.m. Initial investigations reveal that a 57-year-old man, known to frequent Kahului, was struck by an unknown vehicle that failed to stop or offer assistance before fleeing towards Kaahumanu Avenue.
Tragically, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Efforts are underway to determine the involvement of speed, alcohol, or drugs in the incident. The Maui Police Department Vehicular Homicide Unit is actively investigating to identify the vehicle and driver responsible for this hit-and-run.
